Why it matters
A sacred day dedicated to the veneration of cows and their calves, honoring the divine bovine who sustains human life through milk, agricultural labor, and sacred offerings. In Hindu tradition, the cow embodies all thirty-three crore deities and is revered as the Earth Mother. Govatsa Dwadashi reminds us of humanity's sacred relationship with the natural world.
How it is observed
Bathing and decorating cows with turmeric, kumkum, and flower garlands; feeding them specially prepared sweet rotis and jaggery; circumambulating cows while lighting lamps; offering prayers to Lord Krishna as Govinda (protector of cows).
Fasting
Abstain from grains and wheat products; consume only milk, curd, and milk-based preparations.
For your practice
Gratitude meditation on the sacred cow as universal mother; chanting of Govinda, Gopala, and Krishna names; contemplation on ahimsa (non-violence) and our relationship with all living beings.
